Ocean and Sea

The Big Blue Blanket and the Little Blue Pockets

Once upon a time, Nikki, a 5 year old girl , asked her father, “Papa, what is the difference between sea and ocean?”

Papa  replied, “there was a giant blue blanket that covered almost the whole Earth. Its name was ‘Ocean’.

Ocean was enormous. So big that if you put all the land in the world together, Ocean would still be much, much bigger! Ocean was also very deep, so deep that you could stack tall mountains inside it and they’d still be hiding underwater.

Now, Ocean had a big family. It had five big parts called the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic. But all of them were holding hands, so really, it was one giant Ocean.”
Nikki said, ” then what is a sea?”

Papa replied, ” Around the edges of Ocean, where the blue meets the land, there were little blue pockets. These were the ‘Seas’.

There was the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, and the Caribbean Sea. Seas were smaller than Ocean and not as deep. They liked to snuggle up close to the land, with beaches and cliffs hugging them on the sides.

One day, a little fish named Finn swam up to Sea and asked, “Are you the same as Ocean?”

Sea giggled. “Not quite! Ocean is the giant blanket. I’m a little pocket on its edge. But guess what? We share the same salty water, and we’re connected, so we’re like family!”

“Ooooh!” said Finn. “So the water is the same, but Ocean is big and deep, and Sea is smaller and closer to land?”

“Exactly!” said Sea. And they splashed happily.

So remember, Nikki:
-Ocean = giant, deep, and covers most of the Earth
– Sea = smaller, shallower, and near the land
– Both are salty and connected, like one big watery family!

Nikki replied, ” Thank you Papa ! Now I have understood clearly. Love you. “
